Shortly before the close of the transfer window, VfL Wolfsburg have signed 28-year-old defender Denis Vavro on loan from FC Copenhagen.
“An internationally proven defender”
“We’re delighted that Denis Vavro has joined VfL Wolfsburg,” said VfL sporting director Sebastian Schindzielorz. “He’s an internationally proven defender and we saw his qualities while we were scouting Kamil Grabara. He has gained experience both with FC Copenhagen in the Champions League and more recently as a starter for the Slovakian national team at the European Championship. We believe that he is the perfect complement to our young players in central defence. Following the departures of Maxence Lacroix and Moritz Jenz, we can now fill the gap in this position with Konstantinos Koulierakis and Denis Vavro.”
200 outings for Copenhagen
The defender has plenty of experience at the top level, with 24 international caps for Slovakia – including four outings from start to finish at the European Championship over the summer. He also featured 12 times in the UEFA Champions League for Copenhagen, contributing to his tally of 200 competitive games for the Danish club, in which he scored ten goals. Vavro initially played for Copenhagen between 2017 and 2019 before moving to Lazio. The 1.89-metre defender subsequently had two loan spells in Spain (at SD Huesca) before securing a permanent move back to the Danish capital in 2022.
