“My role? To put the ball in the net!”

Fenna Kalma is among the newest members of the She-Wolf pack, having arrived over the summer from Dutch side FC Twente to strengthen the VfL attack. In this interview she talks about settling in, her objectives with the Green-and-Whites and representing her country at international level.

Fenna Kalma, you’ve been in Wolfsburg now for around two weeks. How do you like it so far?

Fenna: “The most important thing for me is the club. Everyone at VfL is really friendly and warm, so I feel at home here. After the first couple of weeks I can already say that the level here is very high in footballing terms, and I’m enjoying being able to play on such good-quality turf and artificial pitches. As a footballer, it’s the perfect place for me to improve. I’m grateful for that. Obviously I’m also trying to explore Wolfsburg a bit.”

When Wolfsburg got in touch with you, did you have any doubts about whether you would be able to find a place in such a strong team? Or is that a challenge you’re looking forward to facing?

Fenna: “The latter. When I first heard from Wolfsburg I took it as a huge compliment. I didn’t need to think about it. I know Tommy Stroot, I know myself and I want to push myself to my limits. Wolfsburg is the best place for me to improve and, by doing so, help the team.”

Can you tell us about your role in the team?

Fenna: “My role? To put the ball in the net! Obviously as a striker I want to help the team by scoring goals. I’m also good at passing, I like balls behind the defence and I’m good in the box.”

Have you set yourself any personal objectives for your first year here in Wolfsburg?

Fenna: “Not as such. I want to do my best every day and help the team. The most important objective is to win games with the team and to be successful.”

You’ve had your first experience with the Dutch national team. The Nations League and European Championship are coming up in the next couple of years, so to what extent is it an aim of yours to be included in the squad?

Fenna: “Obviously I’m ambitious and I want to be there. But right now I’m focusing on Wolfsburg and I think that if I do well here, then that will also have a positive impact in terms of the national team. At the end of the day, it’s up to the coach to decide if he wants me there or not.”
