Wolves visiting red-hot Red Bulls

A statistical look at Saturday’s match against RB Leipzig.

VfL Wolfsburg and RB Leipzig have met five times in the Bundesliga since the Saxony club’s promotion to the top flight in 2016. With two wins each and one draw, the head-to-head record is finely balanced, so who will claim the three points and edge ahead when the Red Bulls and the Wolves face off on Saturday (kick-off 15:30 CEST)?

On paper, RB look to be favourites: Ralf Rangnick’s men are the in-form team in the Bundesliga at the moment, having collected an impressive 13 points from their last five games. That run has seen them cement their position in third place, with a UEFA Champions League spot firmly in their sights. Any result at the Red Bull Arena would therefore be gladly received by Bruno Labbadia’s side, who have European ambitions of their own. Here’s a round-up of the key facts and figures on this Matchday 29 clash:

  • The Wolves won 1-0 in the reverse fixture thanks to Jerome Roussillon’s first Bundesliga goal. If they win again in Saxony, it will be the first time VfL have done the double over Leipzig.
  • The two sides also met in the last 16 of the DFB Cup in February. Leipzig triumphed 1-0 on that occasion, with Matheus Cunha scoring on his debut in the competition to end the Wolves’ dreams of another cup success.
  • Saturday’s match is a reunion for Leipzig’s Timo Werner and Wolfsburg’s Daniel Ginczek – albeit one with some unpleasant memories. The two strikers played together at VfB Stuttgart between 2014 and 2016, suffering relegation to the second tier in their final season.
  •  VfL coach Labbadia can take heart from his positive head-to-head record against his opposite number Rangnick. The Wolves boss has got the better of the current Leipzig head coach on four occasions in his career, sharing the points once and losing just once.
