The Wolves' familiar defensive stability was clear to see in the opening exchanges at the Allianz Arena as the hosts pushed for an early goal, only to be frustrated by VfL's shape and discipline. However, two quickfire efforts from Serge Gnabry and Robert Lewandowski shortly after the half-hour mark put Bayern on course for all three points, with James Rodríguez's strike early in the second half ending the Green-Whites' hopes of mounting a comeback. Further goals from Thomas Müller, Joshua Kimmich and another from Lewandowski compounded a disappointing afternoon for Bruno Labbadia's charges.
One change for VfL
Labbadia only made one change to the side that began last week's 1-1 draw at home to Werder Bremen, with Croatian winger Josip Brekalo replacing Felix Klaus in midfield. Long-term absentees Ignacio Camacho and Daniel Ginczek were the only players unavailable for selection.
Bayern break the deadlock
The home team dominated possession from the outset, but apart from a half-chance inside the first two minutes for Lewandowski, which was well saved by Koen Casteels, they struggled to break down VfL's backline. The Wolves could even have edged ahead themselves, but Yannick Gerhardt's glancing header from Maximilian Arnold's corner could only tickle the roof of the net. Bayern went ahead shortly after that, however, when Gnabry flicked in at the near post from Müller's cross, before Gnabry teed up Lewandowski for a tap-in moments later to give the hosts a 2-0 lead at the interval.
No chance of a comeback
The Wolves had fought back from a 2-0 half-time deficit to draw 2-2 on their previous visit to Munich, but any aspirations of a repeat performance were quashed early in the second half when Rodríguez slotted home from the edge of the area. VfL endeavoured to get forward themselves but could find no way through a stubborn Bayern defence, and a frustrating encounter was made even more so late on when Müller, Kimmich and Lewandowski added to the scoreline, sealing a 6-0 win for the hosts and painful defeat for VfL.
