On Saturday 1 September the Wolves face their second Bundesliga assignment of the new season away to Bayer 04 Leverkusen (kick-off: 15:30 CEST). They go into the fixture buoyed by a 2-1 victory at home to FC Schalke 04 on the opening weekend, whereas Leverkusen suffered a 2-0 reverse last week in their Rhineland derby at Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Five-game winning streak
Heiko Herrlich's Leverkusen side took a while to get into their stride last season too, taking just one point from their first three Bundesliga outings in 2017/18. VfL's triumph over Schalke means they have now won their last five competitive matches and will therefore be full of confidence ahead of this game. The last time the Green-Whites put together such an impressive run of results was in 2014 when they won eight consecutive matches under Dieter Hecking.
Goals guaranteed
Fans can look forward to a goal-fuelled encounter on Saturday as none of the previous 45 competitive meetings between these teams have ended in a 0-0 draw. Indeed, at least three goals have been scored in each of the last ten fixtures. In February 2015 the Wolves recorded a spectacular 5-4 triumph at the BayArena in a game in which Bas Dost found the target four times, netting VfL's fifth in the third minute of second-half stoppage time to crown an unforgettable afternoon of football. Incidentally, Daniel Ginczek's 94th-minute winner against Schalke last weekend was the latest goal ever scored by a Wolfsburg player in the Bundesliga.
Guilavogui absent
The Wolves will be deprived of the services of captain Josuha Guilavogui, who sustained a serious injury to his right knee in the first half against Schalke and was subsequently replaced by Yannick Gerhardt at the interval. The 27-year-old Frenchman faces several months on the sidelines but does not need to have surgery and will instead undergo a course of conservative treatment. The hosts also have a personnel change to report following right-back Benjamin Henrichs' recent move to last season's Ligue 1 runners-up AS Monaco.
