Four of those five games have been victories, and this latest triumph was never in doubt once captain Josuha Guilavogui's header gave VfL the lead midway through the first period. Wout Weghorst capitalised on a loose pass to double the advantage before the interval and the Wolves confidently closed out a 2-0 win in the second half, signing off for 2018 on home turf in style. The final fixture of the year for Bruno Labbadia's side is a trip to FC Augsburg on Sunday (kick-off 15:30CET).
Mehmedi and Roussillon return
Wolfsburg head coach Labbadia made two changes to the side that beat 1. FC Nürnberg on Friday, restoring Admir Mehmedi and Jérôme Roussillon to the starting line-up in place of Yunus Malli and Felix Uduokhai, both of whom dropped to the bench.
Guilavogui and Weghorst on target
Buoyed by Friday's win at Nürnberg, the Wolves made an enterprising start at the Volkswagen Arena, central midfielder Maximilian Arnold drawing two good saves from Stuttgart goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler in the opening stages. As soon as the hosts upped the ante, the opener arrived, Guilavogui nodding in his first goal of the season from Arnold's right-wing free-kick. Stuttgart vainly attempted to respond, but Chadrac Akolo and Mario Gomez wasted half-chances, before Weghorst doubled the lead just prior to the interval, the Dutchman slaloming past a couple of defenders and finishing expertly after collecting Santiago Ascacibar's loose pass.
Hosts confidently close out win
The two-goal advantage allowed Wolfsburg to control the second period. Knocking the ball about with aplomb, the hosts held Stuttgart at arm's length, and could have added another goal within ten minutes of the restart, only for William's free-kick to deflect off the wall. Weghorst had the chance to double his personal tally two minutes later, but Zieler saved smartly, before Mehmedi failed to beat the onrushing VfB stopper when one on one in the next attack. With no reason to throw men forward, Wolfsburg defended assuredly in the closing stages, while at the other end the tireless Yannick Gerhardt almost added a third with a volley from Daniel Ginczek's pass. That he didn't mattered little – the Wolves had already done enough to claim three points and continue their unbeaten streak.
