Win at all costs

Key facts ahead of VfL’s penultimate league game at Schalke.

The Wolves travel to FC Schalke 04 in their final away match of 2019/20 on Saturday 20 June (kick-off 15:30 CEST). A positive result at the VELTINS-Arena would go a long way to keeping VfL above direct rivals Hoffenheim and Freiburg in the race for Europe.

Facts and figures on the game

  • The Royal Blues are without a win in 14 league matches (D6, L8) - a club record.

  • Schalke have also registered their lowest ever points total during the second half of a campaign (nine points in 15 matches)

  • S04 have lost three of their last five Bundesliga home games and have not won at the VELTINS-Arena in six matches. They last tasted victory on home soil in their opening game of 2020, beating Borussia Mönchengladbach 2-0.

  • VfL, meanwhile, have registered twice as many away victories (eight) as home wins (four) this season. The 3-0 defeat in Mönchengladbach on Matchday 32 ended a six-game unbeaten away run in which the Wolves registered 16 of 18 available points.

  • VfL’s top scorer Wout Weghorst has contributed just under a third of his side’s league goals this season (14 of 44). Furthermore, no other Wolfsburg player has taken more penalties in the Bundesliga without missing one (eight).

  • The Wolves have won only one of their last nine competitive meetings with Schalke (eight in the Bundesliga, one in the DFB Cup). VfL have lost six and drawn two of those meetings, with their only win (2-1) coming at the Volkswagen Arena in August 2018.

  • Wolfsburg are without a win in nine league visits to Schalke (D1, L8) - their longest winless run against any current team in the division apart from Bayern Munich (D2, L21).
