Wilms sidelined

New She-Wolves signing Lynn Wilms faces a long spell on the sidelines with a back problem.

VfL Wolfsburg Women will be without new Dutch signing Lynn Wilms for several months. The 20-year-old defender, who joined the She-Wolves from FC Twente on 1 July, is suffering with a back problem which rules her out of training for the foreseeable future. Wilms was involved in the Olympic football tournament in Japan, starting three matches and playing the whole 120 minutes in the Netherlands’ penalty shootout defeat to the USA in the quarter-finals.

A scan conducted by VfL confirmed that a long recovery phase is necessary to relieve Wilms’ pain and get her back up to full match fitness. Despite the injury, Wilms will join her new team-mates at their Harsewinkel training camp on Friday.

“A bitter blow”

“The diagnosis is a bitter blow for the team and of course for Lynn,” said Ralf Kellermann, VfL Women’s sporting director. “Taking part in the Olympics is a career highlight for any female footballer and we wished our participants the greatest possible success. It goes without saying, however, that the responsible handling of players’ health should be of utmost importance at such a big tournament. We now need to offer Lynn the best possible support during her recovery and rehabilitation.”
