„We need to deliver from the off”

VfL head coach Stephan Lerch looks forward to the UWCL quarter-final against Glasgow City.

The day before the UWCL finals tournament in Spain began with a visit to the Estadio Anoeta for VfL Wolfsburg Women. Ahead of their quarter-final tie against Glasgow City on Friday, head coach Stephan Lerch spoke about…

...the squad: All of the players are currently available for tomorrow – that’s the situation ahead of the final training session.

…their opponents: It has to be said that at the beginning of the year, we’d prepared really hard to face Glasgow. Then the coronavirus crisis happened and since then, Glasgow haven’t played any competitive matches. As such, it’s become a bit tougher for us to prepare to face them, particularly since Glasgow have some new recruits in their squad. We’ve obviously done our homework on those players and got all the data that’s available on them. What’s more important though is to focus on our own game. We’re hoping to make it through to the next round and if we play to our full potential tomorrow, we won’t have to adapt to our opponents too much.

…the different format with one leg per round as opposed to two: It’s a very attractive and exciting format because you need to be ready from the off. You don’t get any second chances by way of a return match, so I think that it will be totally different for everyone in terms of nerves, focus and concentration at the start of each match. But either way, we need to deliver from the off.
