VfL Women set for final push

All you need to know about the She-Wolves’ remaining fixtures.

Spielerinnen des VfL Wolfsburg klatschen ab.

There’s no game for VfL Women this week as the team get to enjoy a free weekend. From the start of May, the final stage of the 2023/24 season begins for the Green-and-Whites. Here’s an overview of the final fixtures with key info on each clash:

Home league game against Köln

On Friday 3 May, the She-Wolves entertain 1. FC Köln at the AOK Stadion on Matchday 20 of the Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga. While VfL are all but guaranteed second place in the table thanks to a nine-point lead over Frankfurt, Köln picked up vital points in their battle for survival with a 2-0 win against Freiburg last time out. Daniel Weber’s side are not safe yet, though. The match is also important for the She-Wolves: firstly to avoid giving the title to FC Bayern Munich on Friday before they’ve played, and secondly as a final test before the cup final against Bayern.

Cup final against Munich

The highlight of the season will undoubtedly be the DFB Cup final on Thursday 9 May, with VfL Women doing battle with Bayern at the Rhein-Energie-Stadion in Cologne from 16:00 CEST. “The attention has clearly turned towards the cup final, we want to prepare as best we can,” said Viven Endemann. “Every final feels different emotionally, and it’s felt like every final in recent years has been close,” added Alexandra Popp. Last year’s showpiece was a sellout with 44,808 spectators, and this year it will be no different.

Away to Bremen

After the cup final, the Green-and-Whites will make their way directly to Bremen, where they meet Werder in the Women’s Bundesliga on Sunday 12 May at 18:30 CEST. The hosts have already achieved their aim of survival with a 10-point gap to 11th place.

Season finale against Essen

The 2023/24 campaign ends for the She-Wolves on home turf at the AOK Stadion, where SGS Essen are the visitors on Whit Monday, 20 May, at 15:30 CEST. VfL will be aiming to use the opportunity to say goodbye to their fans with a win before the summer break, as well as hopefully being able to celebrate a cup triumph with their supporters.
