VfL Women end year with a win

The VfL Women beat MSV Duisburg 4-0 in their last game of the year.

The She-Wolves recorded their 12th victory of the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga season, the 4-0 triumph over Duisburg at the AOK Stadion leaving them top of the standings as they head into the winter break.

Alexandra Popp, Ingrid Engen, Anna Blässe and Ewa Pajor got the last goals of 2019 for the Green-and-Whites, who are next in action away to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in mid-February (exact date and kick-off time still to be determined).

“We stayed patient”

VfL head coach Stephan Lerch: “We went into the game expecting Duisburg to sit deep around their own penalty area, and at times they even had six at the back. We stayed very patient and kept trying to open up gaps. We had some very good chances, including a couple of gilt-edged ones in the first few minutes. We’ve put those kinds of chances away in our past few games, but didn’t do so today. Still, my team deserve credit for keeping calm. After the break we made the breakthrough and got our reward with four goals, so overall it was a successful way to round off the year.”
