Women

Unstoppable

VfL Women are through to the DFB Cup quarter-finals after beating FC Bayern Munich 3-1.

The She-Wolves’ last DFB Cup defeat came six years ago to the day, and their dominance in the competition shows no sign of coming to an end after they beat FC Bayern Munich 3-1 in a gripping last-16 tie on Saturday. Ewa Pajor (2) and Dominique Janssen got the goals for the holders in front of 1,400 spectators at the FC Bayern Campus, with Jovana Damnjanovic scoring what proved to be no more than a consolation for the hosts.

The result extends the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga leaders’ perfect record this season to 15 matches. Stephan Lerch’s side will only discover their quarter-final opponents on 9 February 2020, when the draw for the last eight takes place live on German television channel ARD. The quarter-final ties will be played on 21/22 March 2020.

Fans of the women’s game will not have to wait quite so long for the next meeting between VfL and FC Bayern: The two heavyweights face each other in the Bundesliga on Saturday 23 November (kick-off 13:00 CET).

“A very open contest”

VfL head coach Stephan Lerch: “We’re really pleased to have overcome a difficult challenge, but it could have ended differently. The second half in particular was a very open contest in which Bayern also created chances and we made it 2-1 at a convenient time. The fans saw a gripping, exciting and high-quality game and we’re very happy to have reached the next round.”
