Following two extremely difficult seasons that ended with the Wolves avoiding relegation via the play-offs, in 2018/19 the Green-Whites finally settled into a rhythm again and even qualified for the UEFA Europa League thanks to a strong conclusion to the campaign.
Before VfL start preparations for the upcoming season on 30 June, over the next few days we will look back on the past year and highlight the standout records, facts and figures. The first part shines a spotlight on the team's best statistics in 2018/19.
Record win: The thrilling 8-1 triumph over Augsburg on the final day of the season was the first time the Wolves' first team had ever scored eight goals in a competitive match. It was also the largest-ever margin of victory in the club's Bundesliga history.
Big leap: Having earned just 33 points over the course of the previous season, the overall tally jumped to 55 in 2018/19. That made it the fourth-best campaign in VfL's top-flight history, behind only the title-winning 2008/09 season, as well as 2013/14 and 2014/15.
Home fortress: An important factor in the Wolves' success last term was the team's strength on home turf once again. Whereas in 2017/18 the Green-Whites managed just three victories at the Volkswagen Arena, last season they recorded eight wins, five draws and four defeats.
Happy travellers: Wolfsburg's consistency also extended to their away matches, where they generally put in some impressive displays. The return of 26 points on the road in 2018/19 was the club's third-best haul after 2007/08 and 2008/09.
Eye for goal: VfL's attacking department were ruthless in the final third, converting 19 per cent of all goalscoring chances (compared to 13 per cent the previous season). Only runners-up Borussia Dortmund were more efficient in this regard with 24 per cent.
Peak condition: Another of the most crucial aspects of VfL's 2018/19 season was the players' superb fitness levels. The Wolves were able to maintain their efforts in the closing stages of matches and scored an impressive 17 times in the final 15 minutes. Only the top two, Bayern Munich (18 goals) and Dortmund (25), found the net more often from the 75th minute onwards.
