She-Wolves march on

VfL Wolfsburg Women beat SGS Essen 5-1 on Saturday.

Despite missing seven players through injury, there was no stopping the VfL Women in the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga as the league leaders stormed to a 5-1 victory against SGS Essen at the AOK Stadion. The She-Wolves’ goals came from Pia-Sophie Wolter, Pernille Harder, Sara Gunnarsdottir, Claudia Neto and an own goal, while Turid Knaak netted for the visitors.

The Green-Whites have two more games before the next international break. This Wednesday (30 October, 19:00 CET) they play the second leg of their UEFA Women’s Champions League round of 16 tie at FC Twente, holding a 6-0 cushion from the first leg. It’s then back to league action next Sunday (3 November, 14:00 CET) with a trip to SC Freiburg.

“Can only take my hat off”

VfL head coach Stephan Lerch: “The result doesn’t exactly reflect the course of the game today. Essen, with their considerable attacking qualities, played well and caused us problems early on. We took a while to get to grips with that but then we grew into the match and scored our goals. It could’ve got a bit frantic after Essen’s goal but we coped well with that situation, too. There were certainly some people who thought we might drop points today, particularly with the number of players we had missing. To then produce a performance like that and win 5-1, I can only take my hat off to the players.”
