She-Wolves held by Bayern

The VfL Wolfsburg Women drew 1-1 at home to Bayern Munich on Saturday.

Just a week after posting a 3-1 victory away to Bayern in the last 16 of the DFB Cup, the She-Wolves faced the same opposition at home in the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga. In another intensely fought encounter, Alexandra Popp scored an early opener for the Green-and-Whites in front of a season-high 3,245 fans at the AOK Stadion, before substitute Mandy Islacker netted the equaliser for the visitors.

The result means there is no change at the top of the standings, especially as second-placed TSG 1899 Hoffenheim drew 2-2 in Frankfurt. VfL round off the first half of the season on Friday 29 November with a trip to Bayer Leverkusen (kick-off 19:15 CET).

“We didn’t kill the game off”

VfL head coach Stephan Lerch: “It wasn’t a top-notch performance from us, but we could’ve easily won the game given that we had the better chances. We had greater control of the match in the second half, making Bayern chase the ball and also creating a number of clear-cut scoring opportunities. It’s frustrating that we didn’t kill the game off in that period. At the back we didn’t give them much, but the fact that Mandy Islacker made the most of her chance tells you all you need to know about Bayern’s quality. Overall it’s a big shame we didn’t take all three points.”
