She-Wolves back at the top of the table

VfL Women huff and puff but eventually come away with 1-0 win over Werder Bremen.

Die VfL-Wolfsburg-Spielerinnen jubeln zusammen.

The She-Wolves gave themselves and their fans an early Christmas present by moving back to the top of the table in time for the winter break! The team won their first Monday night match in the Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga 1-0 (0-0) and round off the calendar year in first place.

The 2,814 fans in the AOK Stadion were treated to a strong performance by the visitors from Bremen, who made it hard for the She-Wolves to create many chances. VfL captain Dominique Janssen scored the only goal of the game seven minutes from time to give Wolfsburg a win that was far from pleasing on the eye but nevertheless well deserved.

After the match, the VfL Women players thanked their fans for their support throughout the year. Their next match, which will also finish off the first half of the season in the Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga, will not come until 2024, when the She-Wolves travel to SGS Essen on the last weekend in January (date kick-off time yet to be announced).

Goals

1-0 Janssen (83): Out of nowhere, the She-Wolves take the lead. Dominique Janssen lofts over a cross from the left towards the penalty box and somehow the ball ends up evading Catalina Perez in the Bremen goal and finding its way into the back of the net – the kind of goal that was to be expected in a match like this one!

Lena Lattwein: “This really was a tough match. Bremen made life very difficult for us and defended well in numbers. We controlled the game but didn’t threaten their goal enough. We were desperate to score and we never gave up, and obviously we’re happy with the win and the three points.”
