Women

Routine victory

VfL Women keep title hopes alive with a 3-1 win over SC Sand.

VfL Wolfsburg Women may no longer have their fate in their own hands in terms of defending their FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga title, but the She-Wolves remain hot on the heels of leaders Bayern Munich after earning a 3-1 victory away to SC Sand.

Rebecka Blomqvist, Karina Saevik and Pia-Sophie Wolter got the goals for the Green-and-Whites in a comfortable triumph close to the French border, with Chiara Loos on target for Sand.

The team’s focus is now already on the next game, namely their UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final second leg against Chelsea on Wednesday 31 March in the Hungarian capital of Budapest (kick-off 14:00 CEST).

“Fully committed”

VfL head coach Stephan Lerch: “Before the game I’d said that some of the people who didn’t play on Wednesday would get a run-out today, and they were fully committed. But it’s also clear that not every pass finds its target when you make so many changes. At the end of the day we wanted to take all three points and we managed that with this hard-fought win.”
