There was good news for all Wolves fans on Monday, with midfielder Rexhbecaj signing a three-year contract extension which keeps him at VfL Wolfsburg until 2023. His current deal had another year left on it, but the Green-Whites have now tied the player to a new long-term contract.
“Elvis has developed brilliantly and, above all, continually over recent years and made the step up from being a youth player to a Bundesliga player, without losing sight of what’s important,” commented VfL sporting director Marcel Schäfer. “He works hard, he’s very eager to learn and he’s not yet reached the end of his development. We’re delighted he’ll be continuing on the path he’s taken with us.”
Rexhbecaj is also looking forward to the years ahead: “On a footballing level, I owe everything to VfL. I have the best conditions here to develop at a high level. Wolfsburg has become home for my family and me, which is why it was soon clear to me that I would like to extend my contract here and I’ll keep giving my best to continue on an upward curve with VfL.”
The Wolves’ no.37 joined VfL from Brandenburger SC Süd 05 as a 12-year-old in 2010, starting out in the Under-14s and then progressing through every youth team. In 2016, he was promoted to the U23 side, for whom he scored 11 goals in 44 games. The 21-year-old then signed his first professional contract at the start of the 2017/18 season and has been an integral part of the first-team squad since. The defensive midfielder’s Bundesliga debut came in the 1-0 win at Hannover 96 on 28 January 2018 and he has made a total of 27 top-flight appearances to date, scoring one goal.
