Cologne and Eindhoven – two cities where VfL Wolfsburg Women are looking to make history by securing the DFB Cup and UEFA Women’s Champions League titles.

The team are approaching the two finals from different positions. While Barcelona are very much the favourites for the UWCL, the She-Wolves are heavily fancied to take the silverware this Thursday, 18 May (kick-off: 16.45 CEST) in the domestic cup final against SC Freiburg. The Green-and-Whites have taken on an air of invincibility in this competition, with their last defeat now almost a decade ago.

More facts and figures

  • Nigh on 10 years: 16 November 2013 is a date that is being bandied about a lot at the moment – that is when Wolfsburg lost 1-0 away to 1. FFC Frankfurt in the DFB Cup round of 16. And on Thursday, it will be 3,470 days since the team last tasted defeat in the cup.

  • Record hunters: Should they win on Thursday, VfL Women will be taking home the DFB Cup for the tenth time in their history, making them the outright record holders. 1. FFC Frankfurt currently also have nine cup titles but will not be able to add to that tally by that particular name, as they now play under the Eintracht Frankfurt banner.

  • We meet again: VfL Women have met Potsdam three times in the DFB Cup final and SC Sand twice - and they’ve also faced Freiburg before. In 2019, Ewa Pajor scored the only goal in a 1-0 win.

  • Record smashed: Another record is up for grabs – and one where Wolfsburg are not currently the holders. The highest attendance for a DFB Women’s Cup final was set in 2010 at the RheinEnergieStadion in Cologne, and that figure of 26,682 has not been beaten since. That is all set to change on Thursday, though, with 40,000 fans expected to attend in another sign of the much-talked-about boom in the women’s game.
