VfL Wolfsburg Women striker Alexandra Popp secured her place in the record books with five goals in as many consecutive games at the UEFA Women’s European Championship, a feat no player had ever previously achieved.
Now the VfL captain and Germany sharpshooter has another accolade to her collection: the 31-year-old’s strike against France in the Euro semi-final was the clear winner of the July Goal of the Month poll, taking over 50 percent of the votes.
It is the second time a She-Wolf has won the honour, which has been carried out by ARD’s Sportschau programme since 1971. The first was Anna Blässe in 2020 for her 30-yard stunner in the DFB Cup final against SGS Essen. From the men’s team, Roy Präger, Grafite, Ivica Olic and Kevin De Bruyne have also previously won the award.
