With three games to go until the end of the season, the Wolves are still in with a chance of securing a spot in European competition. They sit just one point off seventh place, and they’ll be looking to take another step in that direction when they welcome 1. FC Nürnberg to the Volkswagen Arena this Saturday (kick-off 15:30 CEST). In the meantime, here’s a look at the key facts:
- The Green-Whites have met Nürnberg 12 times at home in the top flight but the only time they’ve kept a clean sheet was when they won 5-0 in November 2001 – the Wolves’ biggest-ever success against der Club. In total, they’ve conceded 16 goals across those 12 home games.
- Wout Weghorst is currently on 14 goals; only Mario Gomez scored more times in his debut season for VfL (16 in 2016/17). What’s more, the striker has been directly involved in 20 goals this term. The last VfL player to register more goal involvements in a single campaign was Kevin De Bruyne, who had a hand in 30 (10 goals, 20 assists) during the 2014/15 season.
- The Wolves have collected 49 points or more from 31 games in only four of their 21 seasons in the Bundesliga. On all four previous occasions, the Lower Saxony men ended the season in a European berth.
- The Green-Whites are unbeaten in their last five home games (three wins, two draws) – they’ve never gone longer than that without defeat at the Volkswagen Arena during Bruno Labbadia’s tenure. It’s also their longest unbeaten run on home soil since an eight-match streak between September and December 2017.
- The victory at Hoffenheim last weekend was the eighth time this season that the Wolves have come from behind to get a result (four wins, four draws). 16 points from losing positions is the joint-best in the league with Borussia Dortmund.
