VfL Wolfsburg Women have the chance to qualify for the quarter-finals of the UEFA Women’s Champions League for the eighth year in a row – and realistically, the final step should be little more than a formality. After a 6-0 triumph in the first leg, the She-Wolves are clear favourites going into Wednesday’s encounter at De Grolsch Veste in Enschede (kick-off 19:00 CET).
No sitting back
However, VfL head coach Stephan Lerch is by no means resting on that cushion. “We want to play our game and demonstrate attacking possession football so that Twente are chasing us,” he said. “But I also think our opponents will give everything again in front of their own fans and will try to level up the scoreline from the first leg a bit, so we’ll need to be wide awake in defence.”
Minde returns
Midfielder Kristine Minde is back after recovering from a muscle injury, but Lerch will again be without Lara Dickenmann (appendectomy), Svenja Huth (knee ligament), Ewa Pajor (knee), Alexandra Popp (ankle ligament), Fridolina Rolfö (foot ligament) and Almuth Schult (rehab after shoulder surgery). If the She-Wolves do finish the job this evening, fans can mark 8 November in their diaries as that is when the draw for both the quarter-finals and semis will be made at UEFA headquarters in Nyon.
