Michael Meeske has been appointed as new managing director at VfL Wolfsburg. The 46-year-old joins from 1. FC Nürnberg and will start his new position on 1 November. Meeske will succeed Wolfgang Hotze, who recently postponed his retirement to continue in his function temporarily and will now leave during the final quarter of the year. Meeske completes the new management team along with Jörg Schmadtke and Dr. Tim Schumacher.

“Michael Meeske is a proven, highly competent professional with many years of experience in Bundesliga football,” said Frank Witter, chairman of the VfL supervisory board. “We’re delighted that we’ve been able to land our absolutely preferred candidate for the third management position. The VfL Wolfsburg management team is now best equipped in all areas.”
Working in Bundesliga since 2002
“I’m very much looking forward to the new challenge at VfL Wolfsburg and to working with my management colleagues Jörg Schmadtke and Dr. Tim Schumacher,” stated Meeske. “It wasn’t an easy decision to leave Nürnberg. I wish FCN continued sporting success but I’m now looking forward to my new role in Wolfsburg. I’m also happy that I can be a bit closer to my family in Hamburg again.”
The Oldenburg native started his career in 1998 at strategy consultancy Kompass, before moving to the Sportwelt investment company two years later. His first foray into the Bundesliga came as marketing director of Hannover 96 in 2002. He then joined FC St. Pauli in 2005, where he stayed for ten years before moving to Nürnberg. His most recent position with the Bundesliga newcomers was as commercial executive. Meeske, who has a degree in social economics, is also on the board of the German Football League (DFL) and German Football Association (DFB).
