Switzerland’s last-16 victory over world champions France on penalties was one of the big shocks of the European Championship. Admir Mehmedi scored the penultimate spot-kick in the shootout late at night on 28 June, and now that has turned out to be his final kick of a ball for the Nati. After almost exactly 10 years in the Swiss shirt, the VfL attacker is bringing his international career to an end.
“It was always my wish to be able to decide the timing of my departure myself,” explained the 30-year-old. “The EURO was a wonderful and fitting conclusion. I’m grateful and proud to have spent so many years with the Nati.” There were also family reasons for his decision, as Mehmedi welcomed his third child on Thursday.
Three tournaments plus Olympics
Mehmedi, who has been with the Wolves since January 2018, made his debut for the Switzerland senior team in June 2011 and has been involved in three major tournaments – EURO 2020, the 2014 World Cup and EURO 2016 – as well as the 2012 Olympics tournament. He netted a total of 10 goals in 76 international appearances, in which he only picked up one yellow card. He featured twice at the recent EURO, where the team’s run ended in the quarter-finals with a 3-1 penalty shootout defeat to Spain.
