She’s not hanging up her boots yet! Defender Marina Hegering will remain a VfL Wolfsburg player next season after agreeing a one-year extension to her contract. Under her original deal, the 33-year-old was set to move from the pitch to the VfL coaching staff ahead of the forthcoming campaign.

37 games in green & white

Hegering has been part of the She-Wolves squad since summer 2022, following two years with FC Bayern Munich. The defender, who has 36 caps for Germany, has made 26 appearances for the club in the Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga to date, along with four in the DFB Cup and seven in the UEFA Women’s Champions League. In that time she’s also proven her goal threat, scoring nine goals in 37 competitive matches overall. She won the DFB Cup with the Green-and-Whites in 2023.

“Great fun playing football”

“I still have great fun playing football and being on the training pitch,” explained Hegering following her extension. “That’s why I wanted to play another season on the pitch, and I’m very happy that the club has responded positively to that. Now I’m looking forward to continuing to work towards our objectives with the team in the new season. It’s important to me that I pass my experience on to others. At the same time, I also take everything that happens as valuable experience for my future.”

“A real leader”

“As a reliable defender with international experience, Marina has a big presence on the pitch,” said Ralf Kellermann, director of women’s football at VfL Wolfsburg. “She’s a real leader whose professional attitude makes her a role model, especially for the younger players in our squad. We’re therefore very pleased that Marina will continue to play for VfL next season.”
