Wolfsburg trio miss out on U19 EUROs despite victory; Dimata on target for Belgium youngsters

Davide Itter in action.

Before the Wolves travel to Hertha Berlin on Saturday (kick-off: 20:30 CEST) in the hunt for vital Bundesliga points, several VfL players were in international action, with a mixed bag of results.

Norway edge Germany to U19 EURO place

There was major disappointment for Wolfsburg youngsters Gian-Luca Itter, Davide Itter and Yari Otto as, despite an emphatic 4-1 win against the Netherlands, Germany missed out on a place at the 2018 UEFA Under-19 Championship, with Norway's win against Scotland confirming top spot in qualification Group A. Davide Itter featured for the entire 90 minutes, while Yari Otto was brought on nine minutes from time. Gian-Luca Itter missed out through suspension.

Dimata spot on

Nany Landry Dimata returns to Wolfsburg after an altogether more positive experience, his Belgium side beating their Hungarian counterparts 3-0 and closing in on a place at the 2019 UEFA Under-21 Championship in Italy. Dimata impressed throughout, with his 72nd-minute penalty sealing the victory.
Josip Brekalo was also in Under-21 action, his Croatia side recording a resounding 4-0 win against Moldova. Sitting second in qualification Group 1, the Vatreni youngsters are also hoping to be in Italy next summer.

At Under-20 level, Wolfsburg keeper Phillip Menzel was in action for Germany, playing 90 minutes in a routine 3-0 win against Poland.

Malli a late substitute

Elsewhere, Yunus Malli featured in the closing stages as Turkey were held to a 2-2 draw in Montenegro, but neither Koen Casteels nor Divock Origi were selected for the Belgium senior side's 4-0 friendly win against Saudi Arabia in Brussels.
