Women

Instant reunion

After knocking FC Bayern Munich out of the DFB Cup last weekend, VfL Women now face the Bavarian outfit in the Bundesliga.

The She-Wolves welcome Bayern to the AOK Stadion in the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga on Saturday 23 November (kick-off 13:00 CET), one week after beating the Bavarians 3-1 away from home in the last 16 of the DFB Cup. A tenth successive league victory for VfL would not only equal their start to last season but also lift them nine points clear of third-placed Bayern in the standings.

Visitors under pressure

Stephan Lerch’s side go into the game six points clear of their top-of-the-table rivals, who cannot afford any slip-ups at the AOK Stadion. “Bayern’s cup exit certainly hasn’t alleviated the pressure on them, and you can’t fully ignore the situation in the table,” said the VfL head coach, who warned his players against underestimating Saturday’s opponents. “Bayern will want to show a reaction.”

Neto sidelined

VfL’s injury problems have eased in recent weeks, but Portuguese midfielder Claudia Neto will miss the She-Wolves’ next two games after suffering a muscle injury during the warm-up of last weekend’s cup win in Munich. Svenja Huth, meanwhile, has not yet returned to training after damaging the medial ligament in her knee and will therefore play no part in Saturday’s game.
