Happy hunting ground

The facts and figures ahead of the Wolves’ away match at SC Freiburg.

Freiburg has been a particularly happy hunting ground for VfL Wolfsburg lately, with the Green-Whites registering wins in each of their five most recent visits to the Black Forest, taking their total to six victories, six defeats and three draws in their last 15 trips to the Schwarzwald-Stadion in all competitions. Indeed, that record makes grim reading for Freiburg coach Christian Streich, who has lost all of his home games against VfL since taking over at the Baden-Württemberg club, conceding 15 goals and scoring just three in that period. We take a closer look at the most pertinent statistics ahead of Saturday’s clash:

  • The trip to Freiburg is the longest in the Bundesliga for Wolves fans – it’s exactly 634 kilometres by car from the Volkswagen Arena to the Schwarzwald-Stadion.

  • VfL are ahead when it comes to the overall record between the two sides, with 14 wins to 11 defeats. The points have been shared on eight occasions.

  • The two clubs first met in the second tier in the 1992/93 season, the only time when there have been 24 teams in the division. After a 3-3 draw in Wolfsburg, the Green-Whites claimed an impressive 3-1 away win.

  • Between this debut success and the next one - a 5-2 win on 9 March 2013 - the Wolves went nine games and almost exactly 20 years without victory against Freiburg.

  • Ivica Olic’s bicycle kick to make it 3-1 in that match was later chosen as the ‘Goal of the Month’.

  • Siegfried Reich is VfL’s leading goalscorer against the Black Forest outfit with five goals, while Alexander Iashvili has netted the most goals (three) for Freiburg against the Wolves.
