Hannover 96 and VfL Wolfsburg meet at the HDI Arena just ten days after their DFB Cup second-round clash, when goals from Admir Mehmedi and Wout Weghorst earned victory for head coach Bruno Labbadia’s side. The Wolves travel to their Lower Saxony neighbours again this evening (kick-off 20:30 CET) – this time on Matchday 11 of the Bundesliga.
Unbeaten in six league games against 96
It’s not just in the DFB Cup that the Reds have been kind opponents for VfL in recent years. The Green-Whites are unbeaten in the last six meetings between the two sides in Germany’s top flight, scoring eight goals and conceding just one on their last three league visits to the HDI Arena.
“Hannover can always be a threat”
“We played very well at Hannover and were very solid,” said Labbadia in Thursday’s pre-match press conference, referring to the recent cup game. “Nevertheless, you saw that Hannover can always be a threat. They’ve shown that recently and they ran Schalke very close, even if the 3-1 result makes the game look more one-sided than it actually was.”
It’s been a difficult season so far for the team coached by ex-Wolfsburg player Andre Breitenreiter. His side are currently languishing in 16th place in the table with just six points from their first 10 matches - their worst showing in the Bundesliga for 30 years.
