Goalless in Munich

VfL Women came away with a 0-0 draw in the top-of-the-table clash at Bayern Munich.

The unbeaten run continues for the newly crowned German champions. Four days after the 2-0 win over SC Freiburg, VfL Women played out a goalless draw with FC Bayern Munich. This was the second time that the top two teams had met this season in the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga and the second time that the match finished all square, with the reverse fixture ending 1-1.

The result means that the She-Wolves are still unbeaten in all competitions in 2019/2020 – a record they will be looking to preserve in the final 90 minutes of what has been an incredible season when head coach Stephan Lerch’s charges take on Bayer 04 Leverkusen at ḥome next Sunday, 28 June (kick-off: 14:00 CEST). The DFB will also present the team with the trophy at the AOK Stadion a week today.

“The type of game that helps us progress”

VfL head coach Stephan Lerch: “We were expecting a tough match and that’s exactly how it turned out. FC Bayern were still looking for the points they need to qualify for the Champions League, and it was also a game where bragging rights were up for grabs. It was pretty clear that Munich wouldn’t be sitting back, particularly since they have played two matches fewer than we have since the restart. We looked dangerous at times when we went from defence to attack, but that takes it out of you in terms of energy. And we have to be honest and say that we didn’t put in the type of performance that we were hoping to. We made the kind of technical and tactical mistakes that we were looking to avoid. I’m not going to hold it against the team, though. We were up for the fight, that’s what counts. I wish we could have matches like this more often – they’re the type of game that helps us progress.”
