“Get back to being compact”

The Wolves travel to Schalke in their last Bundesliga away match of the season.

Saturday 20 June (kick-off 15:30 CEST) will see VfL Wolfsburg play their penultimate match of the current Bundesliga season. The Green-and-Whites will be looking to pick up three points away to FC Schalke 04 in order to maintain sixth place in the table and set themselves up for the 34th and final matchday the following week. Ahead of the match with the Royal Blues, head coach Oliver Glasner spoke about…

…how the defence is performing: “We’ve been a little shaky at the back these past two games. In the weeks prior to that, and before the COVID-enforced break, we were very, very strong in defence. I have every confidence that the players at the back will be at their best once again for the last two matches of the season. I’m not worried about them at all. We’ll be doing everything we can as a team to make sure we get back to being compact in defence.”

…the forthcoming match: “Schalke have looked a lot more solid again in recent games. Sure, they lost to Frankfurt but they almost managed to turn the match on its head. They also looked capable of beating Leverkusen for long periods. We’re not looking at how Schalke are faring though. We need to ask ourselves what we need to do to go there and beat them – that’s what we’re focusing on.”

…how things stand in the table: “If we pick up six points in our last two matches then we’ll finish the season in sixth spot. It’s entirely in our own hands so we’ll be doing everything we can to get three of those points against Schalke.”

…personnel: “Admir Mehmedi will unfortunately be out for the rest of the season, and Josuha Guilavogui has picked up five yellows so he’s suspended. With Jerome Roussillon, we’re not yet 100 per cent certain whether he’ll be able to play or not. Kevin Mbabu is currently having to play every match and he’s feeling it in his muscles.”
