Friendly against Union Berlin

The Wolves will play Bundesliga newcomers 1. FC Union Berlin in a pre-season friendly in Austria.

VfL Wolfsburg will face a stiff test shortly before the end of the club's training camp in Austria, with a friendly lined up against Union Berlin on Saturday 27 July (kick-off 15:00 CEST) at the Maximarkt Sportpark in Anif, Salzburg, just a few weeks ahead of the teams' meeting in the Bundesliga in the new 2019/20 season.

Union finished third in Bundesliga 2 last term but overcame VfB Stuttgart in the promotion/relegation play-offs in May to book their place in the German top flight for the first time ever.

The Wolves have faced the capital city club twice before. In the 1991/92 campaign the teams met in the promotion play-offs for a spot in the second division; the Green-and-Whites won 4-0 at home before emerging 2-1 victors in Berlin.

Familiar faces

Aside from what promises to be an exciting encounter, VfL can look forward to seeing some old friends in the Union ranks. Christian Gentner, who won the Bundesliga title with Wolfsburg in 2009, moved to Berlin over the summer, while Sebastian Polter and Akaki Gogia are also former Wolves players.
