Women

First win of the season

The VfL Ladies earned a 1-0 victory over SC Sand in their first match of the new Bundesliga campaign.

The She-Wolves started the defence of their FLYERALARM Women's Bundesliga crown successfully on Sunday in front of 1,948 spectators at the AOK Stadion, with Pernille Harder scoring the only goal of the game from the penalty spot.

Before kick-off, DFB vice president Hannelore Ratzeburg and kicker editor Michael Richter presented Ewa Pajor with the kicker top scorer's award for last season.

The Green-and-Whites' first away game of the season takes them to MSV Duisburg on Sunday 25 August (kick-off 14:00 CEST).

"Overwhelming superiority"

VfL head coach Stephan Lerch: "I'm very satisfied with the way we played today, but less so with the result. We should have scored one or two more in light of our overwhelming superiority over the 90 minutes. It'll be a similar match away to Duisburg next week in that the opposition will sit deep around their own penalty area. We'll need to find solutions to that and that's what we'll focus on. We have to create more clear-cut chances and make the most of them when we do. For now though, we're happy to have started the season successfully: you get all three points even if you only win 1-0."
