First-leg victory

VfL Women beat Bordeaux 3-2 in the UWCL second qualifying round first leg.

There will be a UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage for the first time in the competition’s history this season – and VfL have a good chance of being involved.

The two-time winners beat FC Girondins de Bordeaux 3-2 in the first leg of qualifying round 2 on Wednesday in front of 637 spectators at the AOK Stadion. Ewa Pajor, Jill Roord and Dominique Janssen were on target for the She-Wolves against the French club, who qualified for the UWCL for the first time last season after finishing third in Division 1 Feminine. Katja Snoeijs and Mickaella Cardia got the goals for Bordeaux.

Reaction

Tommy Stroot: “The most important thing today is the win. We have a small advantage in the second leg. We knew we’d be facing a tricky opponent today and you could see that on the pitch. Overall, it’s a well-deserved win that gives us the lead going into the second leg. First of all, though, we’ll prepare for the game in Bremen.”

The second leg takes place at 19:00 CEST on Wednesday 8 September at the Stade Jean-Antoine Moueix in Libourne. Before that though, the She-Wolves are in FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga action against SV Werder Bremen. That game kicks off at 16:00 CEST on Saturday 4 September.
