VfL Wolfsburg’s women suffered their first defeat of the season in their first competitive match of 2019, losing 4-2 away to Bayern. Stephan Lerch’s side found themselves 3-0 down before quick-fire goals from Nilla Fischer and Ewa Pajor got them back into the game, only for the hosts to seal the victory in second-half stoppage time. The She-Wolves remain top of the Allianz Women’s Bundesliga thanks to their better goal difference, but the two sides are now level on points. The Green-Whites welcome SV Werder Bremen to the AOK Stadion on Sunday 24 February (kick-off 14:00 CET) for their first home game of the year.
"We showed a good reaction"
VfL head coach Stephan Lerch: "Bayern deserved to win today. We could have, and perhaps should have, taken a point. We were second best in the first half, weren't aggressive enough in the tackles and were always a yard off the pace. My team showed a reaction after the break, dominated the game and created a couple chances. We fought our way back after going 3-0 down and showed great character. We had two chances to equalise at 3-3 before they killed the game off. Overall it was very much a game of two halves for us, but that's not enough at this level."
