A hard-fought match at Signal Iduna Park ended in a harsh 2-0 reverse for the Wolves after two last-gasp goals from the home side. The Wolves matched Dortmund in the first half and were in control for much of the second period, with the title-chasing hosts creating little in the way of clear chances. That was until the first minute of injury time, when Paco Alcácer powered a free-kick into the VfL net; he then followed that up with a second goal shortly afterwards. The Green-Whites were thus unrewarded for their good performance and dogged defensive work.
Bruno Labbadia: “It’s an extremely bitter defeat. My team did very, very well against strong opposition. I felt like Dortmund weren’t getting much joy against us. They got stronger near the end of the first half because we weren’t looking after the ball as well. After the break, we were able to get back into our way of playing, we allowed BVB very few chances and looked more likely to win it at the end. To then lose the game in such a way is extremely harsh and I feel particularly sorry for our players, who did a great job today.”
Lucien Favre: “Both teams defended well and had good periods in the game. Wolfsburg were livelier to begin with and then after 20 minutes we got into the game, pushed up and had more possession than Wolfsburg. We applied pressure but didn’t create any clear-cut chances. VfL were always a threat – in the second half, too. We didn’t dictate the game in that respect. It was only in the closing stages that we really went for it. That’s how we got the free-kick and that’s what made the difference.”
