“Exactly what we wished for”

The thoughts of the coaches following the Wolves’ 5-2 win against Fortuna Düsseldorf.

The Wolves displayed spirit, togetherness and also some sizzling attacking quality during their 5-2 triumph as they overran their opponents to earn all three points. Wout Weghorst provided three of the goals while Admir Mehmedi and Robin Knoche also had the Volkswagen Arena rocking. After the Green-Whites' highest-scoring match of the season, the respective coaches had this to say:

Bruno Labbadia: “It was a really good performance from a psychological point of view. To come from behind against Düsseldorf is really hard because they’ve been doing very well recently. It was important to get it back to 1-1. We did well with the goals. The latter part of the game was extremely frantic at both ends. We could’ve scored three more and Düsseldorf could’ve got back into it, but the team did very well today. Last week was the first time we’d played really badly and deserved to lose by a high margin. It’s not been a normal week but in spite of that, we approached the game in a very focused manner. I have to give the players credit for that. It’s exactly what we wished for. It’s nice to have won today.”

Friedhelm Funkel: “It was a remarkable game with a lot of goalmouth action, particularly in the second half. I think it’s clear to everyone now that if we’re not 100 per cent focused and 100 per cent determined to produce our top level of performance, then it’ll be tough for us to win Bundesliga games. Wolfsburg took advantage of that ruthlessly, particularly the mistakes our centre-backs made. They’re normally solid but they had an off day. We weren’t determined enough to prevent the goals and therefore the victory is fully deserved for Wolfsburg.”
