RB Leipzig claimed a deserved 2-0 home win against VfL Wolfsburg on Bundesliga Matchday 29, a scoreline that could even have been higher had it not been for a succession of good saves from visiting goalkeeper Pavao Pervan. Even so, after Leipzig's two first-half goals, there were moments when the Wolves came close to cutting the deficit – and had that been the case, VfL head coach Bruno Labbadia believes his side might have been able to rescue a positive result.
Bruno Labbadia: "We started well in the first 15 minutes or so, but then conceded two goals in quick succession and needed a bit of time to feel our way back into the game. We tried to pull one back early in the second half because we had the feeling that there could have been something in it for us. We took a lot of risks and threw everything forward, but we just didn't pull a goal back, even though we had a couple of chances to do so. Leipzig's quality and quick players mean that of course we're going to allow a few counterattacks, but we didn't want to settle for 2-0; we wanted to try to cut the deficit and then throw everything forward again. We didn't manage that and have to accept that we lost to a very good opponent. It's a shame because the team gave everything and never threw in the towel."
Ralf Rangnick: "That was a top game from both sides. I'm really very pleased with my team's performance. How we played both on and off the ball was very good. We opted for an attacking line-up – similarly to against Leverkusen – with Kevin Kampl deepest in central midfield and Emil Forsberg and Marcel Sabitzer just in front of him. You can't really set up in a more attacking way. The side was still very balanced, and if we're being honest, Wolfsburg were indebted to their goalkeeper in the second period. He was fantastic three or four times."
