Cup quarter-final in Cologne

VfL Women face 1. FC Köln away with a DFB Cup semi-final spot up for grabs.

VfL Wolfsburg Women are set to face 1. FC Köln in the DFB Cup quarter-final on Tuesday evening at the Sportpark Höhenberg (kick-off: 18:00 CET). Ahead of the cup tie against their Bundesliga rivals, head coach Tommy Stroot spoke to the press about…

…squad availability: “Sara Agrez (cold) and Jill Roord (rehab) will miss out, but Lisa Weiß is back after a long time on the sidelines. There’s still a question mark over Joelle Wedemeyer, as she’s got slight cold symptoms.”

…the opponents: “First impressions are that they have quality and some good ideas out on the pitch. In their matches in the first half of the season though, they left a lot of space and don’t always find the right solutions for things. We’re expecting quite an atmosphere.”

…current preparations: “Since the last international break, we’ve had three sessions to prepare for the match in Cologne. We’re going to be playing for 90 or 120 minutes – that won’t be a problem at all for the players. They’re all looking forward to what’s coming up and the challenges we face in the cup, in the Bundesliga and in the Champions League. Everyone is fully focussed.”

…looking to win the cup for a record tenth time: “We know that we’re on this particular run but at the end of the day, that’s just a number. Some of our players obviously know how to deal with knockout matches like these and come away with a result. On the other hand, our opponents have the big incentive of bringing our particular run to an end, so we’ll need to be alert and carry on the way we’ve been playing, with real conviction. Every match is different, and we’ll need to show our quality out on the pitch and make sure that we win the match.”
