Champions already!

VfL Women secure league title with 2-0 win over SC Freiburg.

The FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga trophy is staying in Wolfsburg! VfL Women made it 19 wins out of 20 matches this season on Wednesday and secured their sixth German league title in the process. The 2-0 home win against SC Freiburg maintained the She-Wolves’ eight-point lead over FC Bayern Munich, and with just six more points up for grabs this season, they can no longer be overtaken.

The goals for the defending and now repeat German champions came courtesy of Joelle Wedemeyer and Pernille Harder. The Green-and-Whites will have to wait another 11 days before they get their hands back on the silverware however, with the presentation ceremony coming after their final match of the season against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on Sunday 28 June (kick-off: 14:00 CEST). Before then, the She-Wolves will have to travel to Bayern this coming Sunday, 21 June (kick-off: 13:00 CEST).

Taking a stand against racism

As expected, VfL head coach Stephan Lerch again rotated his squad, making four changes to the team that started the 3-0 win away to SGS Essen. Goalscorer Wedemeyer, Noelle Maritz, Claudia Neto and Pia-Sophie Wolter all came in, replacing Ingrid Engen, Dominique Janssen, Kristine Minde and Alexandra Popp. Before the match, VfL Women wore special warm-up jerseys to mark their commitment to stamp out racism and discrimination.

“I’m very proud of the team”

VfL head coach Stephan Lerch: "We put so much into it and yet we didn’t always manage to create clear chances. What makes it all the sweeter though is that today we were able to reap the rewards of a long and hard season. We’ve been a dominant force in our matches both before and after the COVID-enforced break. “We also came back out after the re-start with as much confidence as we’d had before the three-month lay-off. I’m just delighted that we’ve won our fourth title in a row. The fact that we’ve been leading the way in Germany for a number of years now has taken some doing. I’m very proud of the team – they’ve achieved a heck of a lot this season so far.”
