Women

Back with a bang

VfL Wolfsburg Women kicked off the second half of their season with a 5-2 win at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.

In their first competitive game after the two-month long winter break, the She-Wolves underlined their title ambitions with a 5-2 win at second-placed Hoffenheim that lifts them six points clear at the top of the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga. Pernille Harder, Fridolina Rolfö, Alexandra Popp and Svenja Huth got the goals for VfL in front of 1,710 spectators at the Dietmar-Hopp-Stadion, with Maximiliane Rall and Luana Bühler on target for TSG.

“We always carried a threat”

VfL head coach Stephan Lerch: “I’m very proud and happy that we were able to overcome such a difficult challenge. It shouldn’t be taken for granted. Hoffenheim had a very good first half of the season and we were aware of their strengths. After the break we didn’t always show the required level of control - particularly in transition - but we always carried a threat. It was obviously frustrating to concede the goals we did, but at the end of the day we’re happy to have picked up three important three points.”
