First Team

Always a battle

A statistical preview of VfL Wolfsburg's trip to FC Augsburg.

The sides only having met 14 times in the top flight, fixtures between Wolfsburg and Augsburg are a relatively new addition to the Bundesliga schedule.

Even so, one of those matches will live long in the memory of Maximilian Arnold, who became the youngest player ever to appear for the Wolves in the Bundesliga when he replaced Makoto Hasebe in the closing stages of a 2-0 defeat on 26 November 2011 – the first-ever meeting between the clubs. Of the 14 players involved for Wolfsburg that day, only Arnold remains at the club.

We've collected a selection of other key statistics ahead of Wolfsburg's trip to Augsburg this Sunday (kick-off: 15:30 CET).

  • Augsburg are something of a bogey team for the Wolves: it took five games for VfL to record a win (a 2-1 triumph away from home on 20 October 2013), with only two victories following since. For their part, Die Fuggerstädter have won six of the 14 meetings.
  • Neither side has ever scored more than twice in a game, while it has been goalless at the break on six occasions.
  • With 13 points from their last five games, VfL are – along with Bayern Munich – the Bundesliga's form team.
  • Wolfsburg have won their last two games on the road; the last time the club won three consecutive away games was at the end of 2010/11 going into the start of 2011/12 (1-0 at Werder Bremen, 3-1 at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and 3-0 at 1. FC Köln).
  • The Wolves have never played the day before Christmas Eve in their Bundesliga history.
