Early goals from Eugénie Le Sommer and Wendie Renard put the hosts 2-0 up in front of 17,840 fans at Groupama Stadium in Lyon, before Nilla Fischer scored an important away goal after the break.
Despite the reverse, the She-Wolves will not be too disappointed by the result away to the defending European champions, especially as they remain in a good position going into the second leg on 27 March at AOK Stadion. There, a 1-0 win would be enough for the Green-Whites to progress to the semi-finals.
VfL head coach Stephan Lerch: "It was very much a game of two halves. We didn't start well. Lyon put us under pressure early on and we couldn't find any good solutions to deal with that. The fact that we went behind due to an individual error created extra nerves and their second goal was another big setback. After the break we had a lot of possession and our build-up play kept getting us to their penalty area, but we didn't create any clear-cut chances.
"My team deserved to score the important away goal and with a bit more determination we could even have got more from the game. The second half gives us heart and we need to build on that in the return leg. With our fans behind us – we'll need all the support we can get – we want to score at least once, but we'll have to be on our guard at the back as well. We'll play to win, we’ll give it our all, and I'm optimistic we can go through."
