‘A hard-fought win’

The coaches give their thoughts on VfL Wolfsburg's 2-0 victory over 1. FC Nürnberg on Saturday.

Goals from Felix Klaus and Marcel Tisserand gave the Wolves all three points from what was a fiercely contested game, with the win keeping VfL's hopes of European qualification alive. It therefore came as no surprise that head coach Bruno Labbadia was extremely satisfied with the result.

Bruno Labbadia: "My team deserve huge credit today and they compensated really well for all our absentees. Apart from our two centre-backs, we only really had attack-minded players on the pitch. Renato Steffen and Elvis Rexhbecaj both did remarkably well in unfamiliar positions. Nürnberg are so well organised at the back so we knew it would be difficult to score from open play, but we took our chance brilliantly to break the deadlock after they lost possession. It was nice for Felix Klaus to score, he's earned it over the past few weeks. All in all it was a good, hard-fought win that we both needed and desperately wanted."

Boris Schommers, Nürnberg coach: "We beat ourselves today. We started well and had chances in the first 20 minutes, even if the final ball was lacking. We were on top in the first half and then conceded a goal out of nothing. It was an individual mistake, which is something we can't afford to happen in our kind of situation. We changed our strategy at half-time and went into the second half with fresh impetus, but we couldn't carve out any clear openings. Then Wolfsburg scored from a set-piece, even though we were well aware that they're dangerous from dead-ball situations because they've got a lot of players who are good in the air. That killed the game off."
