VfL Wolfsburg and Ralph Hasenhüttl are going their separate ways after the 57-year-old was relieved of his duties as Wolves head coach with immediate effect on Sunday evening. Assistant coaches Craig Fleming and Patrick Hasenhüttl, analyst Martin Raschick and Rainer Widmayer, who has been acting as a link between the first team and the VfL academy, are also leaving the Green-and-Whites’ coaching staff.
U19 coach Daniel Bauer placed in interim charge
U19 coach Daniel Bauer will take charge of the Wolves’ final two games of the season – at home to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on Friday evening and at Borussia Mönchengladbach on 17 May. He will be assisted by U19 assistant coach Julian Klamt and Under-16 head coach Tobias Holm.
Decision made in close consultation with supervisory board committee
“Ralph Hasenhüttl took over at VfL Wolfsburg during a difficult period last season,” said CEO Peter Christiansen. “He succeeded in stabilising the team and guiding them into calmer waters, which we’d like to thank him for. However, results and developments in recent months have led us to the decision to act now. We reached this decision in close consultation with the supervisory board committee. We wish Ralph Hasenhüttl all the best for the future, both professionally and privately.”
“We’re convinced Daniel can provide fresh impetus”
U19 boss Bauer has been placed in temporary charge of the Wolves first team until the end of the campaign. The 42-year-old, who has been with the VfL academy for nine years, will lead training for the first time on Monday. “Daniel is a man from our own ranks who knows VfL very well and has enjoyed success in the youth department,” said sporting director Sebastian Schindzielorz. “We still have aims for the final two games and are convinced Daniel can give the team fresh impetus with his passion and by acting as a role model.”
We will issue an update on Bauer’s successor in the academy as soon as possible.
