The start of February not only marks the end of the first transfer window of the year. At VfL Wolfsburg, there has been a planned restructuring at management level following the departure of Jörg Schmadtke. Marcel Schäfer, who until now was sporting director, is now the new managing director for sport, working alongside fellow managing directors Michael Meeske and Dr. Tim Schumacher. Unlike his predecessor, the ex-VfL player, who made 314 appearances for the Wolves and won both the league and DFB Cup, is also responsible for the women’s team as well as the men’s first team.
Return to former stomping ground
Sebastian Schindzielorz also took up his role on Wednesday. The 44-year-old former midfielder, who won the Bundesliga alongside Schäfer with the Wolves in 2009, has taken over from Schäfer as VfL’s sporting director as planned. Schindzielorz predominantly turned out for the VfL Wolfsburg reserves between 2008 and 2013, and recently worked at VfL Bochum as managing director.
