Wolves share the points with Hoffenheim

2-2 draw features early own goal and late equaliser.

VfL Wolfsburg and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim played out a 2-2 draw on Friday night. Despite going ahead in the opening minute courtesy of a Leo Östigaard own goal (1’), the Wolves showed little in the way of confidence, conceding the initiative to the visitors whose pressure finally paid off when Pavel Kaderabek levelled the match just after the half-hour mark (34’).

The match went into a holding pattern in the second half until Jonas Wind made it 2-1 to the Green-and-Whites late on (81’). Again however, Wolfsburg failed to hold the lead, with Marius Bülter equalising almost straight away (84’). Neither team really showed enough grit to deserve the three points on the night, although Konstantinos Koulierakis almost stole the win in the dying seconds for VfL, only to be denied by the woodwork.

The final match of the season will see the Green-and-Whites head to Borussia Mönchengladbach (kick-off at 15.30 CEST on Saturday, 17 May).

Goals

  • 1-0 Östigaard (1’): What a start for the Wolves! Mohammed Amoura shoots from close range and Östigaard can only turn the ball into his own net to make it 1-0 for VfL.

  • 1-1 Kaderabek (34’): A cross from Bülter from the left wing finds Kaderabek with far too much space in the Wolfsburg area, and the Czech defender volleys in the equaliser.

  • 2-1 Wind (81’): Wind leaps highest in the area to head home a corner from short range – the Dane’s first goal in over 1,000 minutes of football…

  • 2-2 Bülter (84’): Joakim Maehle slips when trying to clear the ball, and this allows Bülter to be played in at the far post. The forward then unleashes an unstoppable cross-shot to grab a share of the points.

Reaction

Daniel Bauer: “It’s disappointing at the end of the day because we shouldn’t let slip a 2-1 lead. The lads showed a lot of passion, even though we had some weaker periods in the first half and were too passive. We put a lot into it, though, and we can build on our second half. I can’t tell you why we ended up being too passive again after we took the lead. At the break, we looked to change around our attack and that worked well. It should look better next Saturday.”

Christian Ilzer: “If you take out the very end of the match and the start, we defended very well. We were put under a lot of pressure but we coped well, even if we should have defended better in certain situations. We were lucky in the end with the woodwork, but I think we deserved the point we came away with.”
