Second friendly, second win

A mixture of first-teamers and U23 players won 2-1 against SM Caen.

Two teams, one task, one win – Wolfsburg secured a second friendly success on Tuesday with a 2-1 victory against SM Caen. Head coach Oliver Glasner fielded two different teams in each half, with a full-strength line-up starting the game and a selection of the Wolves’ U23 squad taking to the field for the second period.
Their French second-tier opponents went into the lead in just the second minute but Wout Weghorst equalised shortly afterwards (14’), before U23 trialist Mamoudou Karamoko made it 2-1 to the Green-Whites in the second half (58’). VfL’s next friendly is in just a few days’ time: on Saturday 13 July they take on Dutch Eredivisie outfit VVV-Venlo at the GWG-Stadion Flutmulde in Gifhorn (kick-off 15:30 CEST).

"A step forward"

VfL head coach Oliver Glasner: "For me, it was a step forward compared to Saturday, particularly in terms of our positional play and our covering. We were too vulnerable to the counter a lot of the time against Rostock and today it was precisely the opposite. They didn't have a shot on target in the first half other than the opening goal. I was very pleased with how we moved but you could see, particularly in the final third, that the movements still aren't quite in tune. We can, want to and will do that better. We need to take more risks going forward and in certain positions, not just pass it sideways again but rather go for goal. Overall, though, my summary of the game is positive."
