Winning start

VfL Women kicked off the Bundesliga season with a 3-0 win over SGS Essen.

VfL Wolfsburg Women got their season off to a successful start on a special evening at the AOK Stadion. Playing in front of a crowd for the first time in over six months, the She-Wolves ran out 3-0 winners over SGS Essen in the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga curtain-raiser. The 500 fans who were allowed in the stadium, in compliance with legal guidelines, saw a brace from Lena Oberdorf plus a goal from Lena Goeßling. Coach Stephan Lerch was without Sara Doorsoun, Fridolina Rolfö and Ewa Pajor through injury, but in spite of that the German champions produced a good display in the first match of the season to claim a deserved win. The reigning double winners head to Kraichgau for their first away outing of the campaign next Sunday, 13 September (kick-off 14:00 CEST), when they take on last season’s third-placed team TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.

"Very successful start"

VfL coach Stephan Lerch: "What I saw tonight was a very confident and dominant performance from our team. We were at it from the very first minute. It was very nice – but also a bit unusual now – for us to hear the fan chants from the stands and to feel their support. That did us a lot of good. We dominated the opposition and had a lot of possession. It was a very successful start, especially since we didn't have much time to prepare, but now we can feel good about the game."
