Popp commits future to VfL

Germany international Alexandra Popp has extended her VfL Wolfsburg contract until 2025.

Die Nationalspielerin Alex Popp unterschreibt ihre Vertragsverlängerung beim VfL Wolfsburg.

Alexandra Popp has been a VfL Wolfsburg player since 2012, but the She-Wolves captain’s hunger for silverware remains as strong as ever. With just over three weeks to go until the new season kicks off, the 119-time Germany international has extended her VfL contract – which was due to expire in 2023 – until 30 June 2025.

Following the departure of Anna Blässe, Popp is now the only member of VfL’s current squad to have been involved in all the club’s trophy wins. She has lifted 18 domestic and three European titles overall, making her one of the most successful German footballers of all time. Popp has made 177 appearances for VfL in the Women’s Bundesliga, as well as 32 in the DFB Cup and 60 in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

Five goals at EURO 2022

With the German national team, Popp’s biggest achievements include victory at the 2016 Olympic Games and a runners-up medal at Women’s EURO 2022. Popp, who missed the 2013 and 2017 editions due to injury, scored five goals at the tournament in England, playing a key role in Germany’s run to the final. The 31-year-old was named in UEFA’s Team of the Tournament alongside club colleagues Marina Hegering and Lena Oberdorf, and has hopes of winning the 2022 Ballon d’Or having been shortlisted alongside Oberdorf.

I can see the outstanding quality in our team. It’s great fun for me to perform with these girls on and off the pitch and to fight for more silverware.

“Best club in Germany”

“I’m very pleased to be held in such high esteem and I’m extremely happy at VfL Wolfsburg,” Popp said. “When I look back on the last few years, it’s clear I’m at the best club in Germany. I can also see the outstanding quality in our team. It’s great fun for me to perform with these girls on and off the pitch and to fight for more silverware.”

“Strong mentality”

“Alex is one of football’s defining personalities, not just in Germany but worldwide,” said VfL Women sporting director Ralf Kellermann. “Her popularity has grown even more since the European Championships, but we’ve appreciated her exceptional qualities on the pitch and as a leadership figure for a long time. Her strong mentality and irrepressible hunger for success make Alex a role model for our young players, which in turn makes her an important part of our squad. I’m therefore incredibly happy that Alex will continue her decade-long. successful journey with us until 2025 at least.”
